Marco Reus to Real Madrid not happening, says his agent

Marco Reus in action for Borussia Dortmund

Germany international Marco Reus has not agreed to join Real Madrid this January after rumours of a deal spread earlier this month. Reus’ agent, Dirk Hebel, and Borussia Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke have denied the speculation claiming that a deal was nearing completion.

Spanish media outlet El Confidencial had stated that Reus was set to sign a five-year contract with Real Madrid and that both parties were satisfied with the agreements. Reus is available to leave Dortmund if a club triggers his release clause – €25m – and reports emerged suggesting Madrid were also happy to pay Reus’ €7m per year wages.

However, Watzke told German newspaper Bild that there was nothing to this speculation, and Hebel said it was “blatant nonsense”.

Dortmund have been resigned to losing several of their star players in recent years, with Nuri Sahin and Shinji Kagawa starting a trend that led to the departures of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski. Reus and Mats Hummels are the latest to be linked with moves away, especially as Dortmund struggle domestically this season.

Dortmund are 17th in the Bundesliga and in the relegation zone, having lost 10 games – the most of any side this season. Although still prosperous in the Champions League, key men could take the opportunity to leave this January to ensure they play in the competition next season.

A decision on Reus’ future is expected to be made in the near future, but any rumours of a transfer to Real Madrid at this stage are premature.
