Former Arsenal and England player Martin Keown believes the Gunners’ desperation to bag Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is a good move, even if the bid does not succeed ultimately.
After two bids were rejected by the Reds for the Uruguayan footballer, Keown claims the Premier League giants have sent a message to their fans nonetheless, that they are ready to shell out big money in their attempt to grab hold of big names before the commencement of the season.
Keown was quoted by METRO as saying: “It was a demonstration to Arsenal fans. The club were saying, ‘We have £40 million there. We have tried to buy someone else’s best player for a change’. It has shown how serious Arsenal are about spending money.”
Suarez too has made his intention of moving out of Anfield quite clear, and is on a warpath with his club to allow him to move on to another clubs. However, the Reds are yet to take a stance on the issue following the drama surrounding the transfer of the 26-year old.
Meanwhile, Keown claims that the Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger needs to shift focus on bringing in new players into the Emirates as time is running out for the North Londoners.
“Now he needs to go out and buy an obvious talent, someone who is going to hit the ground running. And they don’t come cheap. Fair play to Liverpool for hanging on to Suarez but Arsenal still need to buy two or three players. If they do, I think there is a real chance,” he added.
