28-year-old centre back Martin Skrtel was reportedly unhappy to have lost his first team place to veteran defender and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher in the 2012-13 season. Since then, there have been speculations about him making a move away from Anfield. Though the Slovakian international had insisted that he wanted to fight for his place in the first team at Liverpool.
Skrtel’s agent Karol Csonto said: “I will be in England next week to talk with Liverpool and define Martin’s future.
“There has been no contact between Napoli and Liverpool. Martin has a contract with Liverpool and it is important to honour that.”
The Reds’ defender is being linked with Liverpool ex-boss Rafa Benitez, who brought Skrtel to Liverpool from Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg. Benitez was handed the manager’s post at Napoli after he ended his reign as an interim manager at Chelsea.
“There has been no contact between Napoli and Liverpool. Martin has a contract with Liverpool and it is important to honour that.
“Obviously Napoli know Martin well, but there cannot be any contact between us and them if they do not first reach an agreement with Liverpool.
“Between Martin Skrtel and Rafa Benitez is a professional relationship that has gone on from the years they spent together at Liverpool.
“Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik and Skrtel are very good friends and they met last week.
“The midfielder requested information from Martin about Benitez, while Skrtel has asked questions about Napoli.” he added.
