Fans will always argue about who the better player is: Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo or Barcelona's Lionel Messi but unlike most debates on the internet or even face-to-face, the story of two Nigerians arguing the same debate living in the outskirts of Mumbai might shock you.
Obinna Michael Durumchukwa, 34, a Nigerian international was celebrating his birthday in his rented flat with his friends Nwabu Chukwuma, 22, and John Okoro, 33, with bottles of beer. They began arguing about who the better player was, Messi or Ronaldo and soon things got out of hand.
Durumchukwa flung a glass at Chukwuma – which he dodged – causing it to shatter after hitting a wall. The latter then picked up a shard from the broken glass and proceeded to slash his friend's throat in a fit of uncontrollable rage.
"The friends entered into the debate as they were ardent football fans. The victim entered into the heated conversation and considered Cristiano Ronaldo to be the best football player but the accused were supporting Lionel Messi," said a senior police officer from Tulinj police station to DNA.
"When one of accused started leaving, the victim threw a glass on the accused which hit his face and the glass broke. The accused picked up the piece of the broken glass and, in a fit of rage, slit the throat of the victim," said the officer.
Kiran Kabadi, police inspector, Tulinj police station, said, "The fight which started from football debate ended up with a murder. We have arrested the accused under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code. We will produce the duo at Vasai court on Monday," said Kabadi.
According to the police, Chukwuma's visa has expired while Durumchukwa's passport and visa both expired two months ago.
