Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo committed his long-term future to Real Madrid yesterday and Arsenal star Mesut Ozil paid homage to his former team-mate calling him one of the best players to ever play the game.
Ozil and Ronaldo formed an almost telepathic realtionship during the German’s 3 year spell at the Spanish capital with Ronaldo finishing off many of Ozil’s passes. In fact, the German assisted Ronaldo an incfredible 27 times during his time at Real Madrid.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official Youtube channel, Ozil was effusive in his praise for Cristiano Ronaldo’s hard work and dedication:
“He is the first guy in the dressing room and the last guy to go home. He wants to fight even in a training game.
“He made me better on the pitch. Of course, I give my assists, a lot, to him and he knows. But I really enjoyed playing with him because he does not need a lot of chances.
“So even if I give him two assists, he will score two. Amazing player. One of the greatest players in history.”
I felt bad for David Luiz after the 2014 World Cup semi-final – Ozil
One of the best moments in Ozil’s career was the 2014 World Cup triumph. The German football team were magnificent throughout the tournament with the standout result being their incredible 7-1 victory over hosts Brazil.
Germany absolutely played Brazil out of the park in the Maracana, famously leading 5-0 within 39 minutes. Now, Ozil has revealed that he and his German team-mates felt bad for the humiliation they dished out in the semi-final.
The Arsenal playmaker even admitted that he felt obliged to apologise to then PSG defender David Luiz for the manner in which they beat them. Ozil said:
“Of course, all the players on the pitch were a little bit surprised. But after 20 minutes, 4-0 you can't realise what has happened.
“If you lose a big game like that in your country and you see the fans crying, the players crying, you feel it with them. So I went to David Luiz and really apologised.
He told Luiz: 'You have a nice country with nice people, and with what we've learned here, we've had a really good time.”
Ozil has started off the season in good form for the Gunners and Arsenal fans will be hoping that the German inspires them to the Premier League title this season.
