Mexico set to put Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez on the bench for World Cup opener

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is set to be awarded a place on the bench for Mexico’s opening World Cup game against Cameroon on Friday.

After a regular for the national side, Mexico boss Miguel Herrera is expected to leave Hernandez on the bench as he has struggled to play a considerable amount of time this season for United to warrant a place in the starting XI.

Hernandez, who has been linked in a swap deal for Luke Shaw, is currently disgruntled with life at Old Trafford after falling behind in the pecking order for United. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie occupy the front roles, while Danny Welbeck and the expected additions up-front in the summer will rival him even more for a starting berth.

According to Sport, Hernandez will be replaced by Giovani dos Santos and Club America’s Oribe Peralta who are tipped to start against the African side in the Group A clash.

Herrera is still confident his side can get a result no matter who starts.

“I know that all of my players are going to leave their soul on the pitch to achieve a result. We are ready to go out and win.

“This is a very important game for us, key to our aspirations to progress to the next round. We know it’s not going to be easy but we are going to work very hard to beat Cameroon.”
