United States Men
Mexico and New Zealand square off in a friendly on Saturday

Mexico and New Zealand return to action on Saturday when they square off in a friendly at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Darren Bazeley’s men head into the weekend looking to get one over El Tri, having lost their last six encounters since 1980.

Mexico endured a truly forgettable campaign in the 2024 Copa America as they suffered a surprise group-stage exit from the continental showpiece in July. Jaime Lozano’s men picked up just one win from their three matches in Group B to finish third on goal difference and crash out in the group stages for the first time since 2015.

However, Mexico will be backing themselves to find their feet this weekend as they take on an opposing side who have lost their last six meetings since 1980.

New Zealand, on the other hand, clinched a record-extending sixth OFC Men's Nations Cup title on June 30 when they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Vanuatu in the final. Bazeley’s men enjoyed a perfect run to the final, seeing off Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tahiti while scoring 12 goals and keeping three clean sheets.

However, New Zealand head into the weekend without a win in their last seven friendly games since March 2023 and will be looking to end this 18-month run.

Mexico vs New Zealand Head-To-Head and Key Numbers

  • This will be the eighth meeting between the two nations, with Mexico picking up six victories from their previous seven encounters.
  • New Zealand have managed one win in that time, which came in their first-ever encounter in August 1980, when they beat El Tri 4-0 in a friendly.
  • Mexico have failed to win four of their last five matches across all competitions, losing three and claiming one draw since June 6.
  • New Zealand are on a run of seven consecutive friendly matches without a win, losing five and picking up two draws since a 2-1 victory over China in March 2023.

Mexico vs New Zealand Prediction

While New Zealand will look to pick up from where they left off in the OFC Men’s Nations Cup, they go up against a significantly superior Mexico who have won their last six meetings.

We predict a thrilling contest at the Rose Bowl, with Lozano’s men coming away with the desired result.

Prediction: Mexico 2-1 New Zealand
