Michael Owen has admitted his surprise that Liverpool have yet to make any additions to their defensive unit this summer, feeling that was the area manager Brendan Rodgers needed to focus on strengthening.
Only Tottenham Hotspur has a worse goals-against record than Liverpool in the top eight of the Premier League last season as the Reds frequently displayed a leaky back-line, and defenders were thought to be the priority for Rodgers in the close season.
However, while Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market early on, they have only added to their attacking options, with Rickie Lambert having joined early in the transfer window and Adam Lallana now having joined Liverpool from Southampton for a reported fee of £25million.
The signing of Emre Can, meanwhile, is expected to be announced shortly to bolster the base of the midfield.
Although Owen is impressed by the signing of Lallana, the Anfield youth product has been perplexed that Liverpool have done little to address the obvious flaws in their defence, with plenty linked but no concrete moves aside from the failed bid for Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno.
Owen claimed, reports the Sport Review, “Lallana is another good buy for Liverpool.
“Plenty of attacking options for next season, but I’m surprised that Brendan Rodgers hasn’t added a defender to his squad.”
