When Swansea City signed Michu on a £2 million deal from Rayo Vallecano on 20th July 2012, none of us had any idea about this Spanish talent. Very few might remember Michu scoring a first minute goal against La Liga giants Real Madrid in a 3-0 win. But for everyone who didn’t know him, Miguel Michu has marked an astute impression. Currently the fourth highest scorer in the Premier League with 13 goals, and the highest scoring midfielder, Michu has already bettered his £2 million price tag. His ability seems charming, and his form irresistible. With his exceptional eye for goal, he has already set up a great fan base around him. His trademark celebration has also attracted football fans.
Miguel Perez Cuesta, or simply Michu, was born on March 21 1986, and started playing football from an young age. He has established himself as a prolific goal scorer. The 1.85 meter tall Spaniard Michu has scored many important goals, most notably, his League Cup semifinal first leg goal against Chelsea and a league goal against Manchester United. The Spaniard is just beginning to showcase his talents. His club career began at Real Oviedo, a lower division club in Spain, from which he moved to Celta Vigo B team. He was eventually called up for the first team in 2007-08. He scored 13 goals for the club over 4 seasons, not very impressive. But Michu’s ability in the air, and his talent of setting up goals was sighted by the then Rayo manager José Ramón Sandoval, who signed him to the Madrid club. He was impressive through the season, scoring 17 times in 39 appearances, again, a fine tally for a midfielder.
He stunned Real Madrid fans with a first minute goal at the Santiago Bernabeu, in the lesser speculated Madrid derby between Vallecano and Real.
His performance was acknowledged by the great Michael Laudrup, who was the newly appointed Swansea City manager. Michu signed a three year deal with the club, and was handed the no. 9 shirt. The Premier League action that followed saw him play as Swansea’s main striker instead of an attacking midfielder, as one might have bet. But as it seems, Laudrup got his bets right, and there you have him – amongst England‘s top stars, only behind Van Persie, Suarez and Demba Ba in the goalscorers list. Michu has 13 League, 1 Fa Cup and 2 League cup goals in England for Swansea City. Another wonderful news for all Michu fans is that Spain’s Coach, Vicente del Bosque has called upon Michu to play in the friendly against Uruguay on February 6th. Considering his recent form, big clubs targeted Michu, and his cost is estimated to be almost seven times the money paid by Laudrup. However, the attacking midfielder turned striker has rested all the speculations by signing another four-year contract with the Swans.
