Mohun Bagan started the match in style as new signing Dudu got at the end of an Azharuddin cross to hand the Mariners the lead in the fourth minute of the match. Kean Lewis played an important part in the buildup as it was his through-ball that freed Azharuddin on the right wing, who just passed the ball past the on-rushing keeper for Dudu to tap the ball in from three yards.
Bagan were at it again in the 7th minute when they won the ball in midfield and when the ball fell for Bhowmick he started running at the defenders. His shot, however, took a massive deflection to give the goalkeeper no chance as Bagan took a commanding 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes of the game.
Bagan kept the pressure on Tollygunge as Dudu went close again after a beautiful cross from Katsumi Yusa. The Nigerian’s header was just inches wide off the post. Dudu did, however, make up for the missed chance in the 43rd minute when a wayward cross found him with his back to goal in the box. The striker took one touch to control the ball and his second was blasted into the back of the net.
Mohun Bagan headed into the interval with a lead of 3-0 and a performance that was perfect in every sense. Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul had very little to do in the first half as Bagan looked like the team who had won the I-League after thirteen long years.
Tollygunge pulled a goal back in the second half
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first one with Bagan controlling the game and trying to create an opening. Bagn started piling on the pressure after ten minutes as Yusa’s unstoppable shot came off the post and Azharuddin’s shot was saved brilliantly by the goalkeeper.
Even when Tollygunge scored in the 79th minute though an Adileja goal the fightback was timed slightly late as the experienced Bagan defense held firm till the end slingshotting them into third place in the table. They are still five points behind East Bengal who beat Police FC by 4 goals to 1.
The main event of the Kolkata Football League i.e. the big derby will be played in the last game week of the tournament, but East Bengal would have to drop points elsewhere to realistically give Bagan a chance at winning the title.
