#9 David Luiz
Only in the next game of the tournament – the semi-final – it was David Luiz who had to be comforted after what was one of Brazil’s darkest nights in their rich footballing history.
Hoping to win the World Cup on home soil, Brazil had marched to the semi-final and were facing Germany at Estadio Mineirao in front of a capacity crowd of 58,141. However, what unfolded in the first 30 minutes of the game was something no Brazilian had ever thought of even in their worst nightmares.
The Brazil team bereft of Neymar were exposed on the break and self-combusted as the Germans – led by Toni Kroos – hit 5 goals past them before the half-hour mark, crushing the dreams and the souls of the 11 playing, the thousands in attendance and the millions watching at home. Die Mannschaft added 2 more goals in the second half before Oscar pulled one back as Brazil suffered one of their most humiliating losses of all time.
David Luis was visibly dejected after the game and Thiago Silva – who had missed out on the game due to an injury had to console his teammate.
