Ahead of Chelsea’s away trip to the Merseyside this weekend, manager Jose Mourinho told reporters that Thibaut Courtois will be out for a “long time” as he requires surgery on his knee, The Mirror reported. A lot of issues were up for debate including the recent signing of Papi Djilobodji, Thibaut Courtois’ latest injury and his team news for Saturday’s clash.
The Portuguese tactician has all the motivation he needs to prove his doubters wrong and has done it a number of times in the past. However, he and his team has made a dreadful start to their season and it has not gone according to their plan as Chelsea are on a mission to defend the title this season.
Courtois suffers an injury setback
The main talking point in the press conference was on the latest news about Chelsea’s number one keeper, Thibaut Courtois. It was reported yesterday that the tall Belgian goalkeeper suffered a knee injury during the training session right after the day he arrived from international duty.
The 24-year-old was dismissed in the opening day of the season against Swansea City and he was suspended for the game against Manchester City. To add more misery to Chelsea fans, Mourinho has confirmed that Courtois is set to undergo surgery and will be sidelined for a while.
Mourinho said: “Courtois was injured in a training session and as a consequence he will be out for quite a long time.
“I cannot be more specific about the injury and the time he will be out. I just know he will be out for some time. I wait for Dr Biosca to be more specific after (his) surgery.
“It’s a big blow but you will not see me speaking again about Thibaut. He’s injured, he’s injured. It’s not easy to have the best goalkeeper in the world injured. But it is easy to have one of the best goalkeepers in the world to play. Begovic is very, very good.
"I’m sad for Thibaut and sad for the team but we have a top goalkeeper and Begovic will be in goal.”
The Portuguese manager also confirmed that youngster Jamal Blackman will now become second choice keeper. In Mourinho’s own words, the young English custodian lacks experience but has potential.
Oscar is available for the Champions League fixture
The tactician has confirmed that his Brazillian playmaker Oscar, is also joining Courtois in the list of absentees for the away trip to Goodison Park. Oscar has featured only once for the Blues this season. The club’s official website confirmed that the Brazilian will be missing from the squad against Everton, however, he could feature in the Champions League match on Wednesday.
Oscar has missed 3 games already due to injury and the Blues will be hoping that his return can spark a rejuvenation to their season.
Mourinho spoke about Papy Djilobodji
Many eyebrows were raised when Chelsea made a surprising signing of Papy Djilobodji on transfer deadline day. However, Mourinho has insisted that he believes in his new signing and will be a success in the future.
The former Real Madrid manager said that the Nantes man wasn’t his choice but that he trusts the person who made the decision.
“It was not my choice; it was the choice of somebody I trust completely, which is the same.
“In my case I trust them because the person who told me Djilobodji can be a good squad player for us was the same person who told me Zouma can be a fantastic player for us. Djilobodji is one of our four central defenders and hopefully he can be useful for us.”?
