One of the most exciting things about the last two months is that finally we have started to see some genuine attacking play from our wingers that differentiates them from the defence beyond their position on the pitch.
Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard and although not a winger Fernando Torres have all shown a confidence and willingness to take on defenders that we have not seen in years.
Running at them, dropping the shoulder and generally causing chaos we now have a tool that can unlock even the most firmly parked bus, creating space and opportunities. Recent examples include Schurrle in Bucharest and Fernando Torres against Manchester City. It’s exciting, gets the crowd going and is creating goalscoring opportunities.
This new attitude is a happy return to the days when Arjen Robben and Damien Duff terrorised defences when Jose Mourinho was here the first time. The 4-3-3 formation needs players to be bold particularly on the counter attack, move the ball quickly which is why we have struggled at times against sides that park the bus.
We have been starved of this style since Duff and Robben left, we have had players out of position to fit the system, breeding frustration rather than excitement. In this position you need an extra gear going forward.
Players like Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda who often contributed but often when faced with space out wide would check back and pass infield when encountering a defender.
Love the return of the winger and long may it continue.
