Jose Mourinho's madness costing Chelsea

Mourinho Rui Faria Chelsea

A master tactician and a serial winner, it is easy to see just why Chelsea fans were so desperate for Mourinho to return, once he had announced he was leaving Real Madrid.

A Champions League semi-final and a 3rd place finish, followed by a canter to the league title last season further enhanced his reputation among the already adoring support. This season looked set up to be a further promising year, with several pundits and bookmakers making Chelsea favourites to successfully defend their crown. The start however has not gone to plan.

A defeat to rivals Arsenal in the Community Shield, coupled with an opening day draw at home to Swansea should have left his team’s performance under scrutiny. Mourinho however had other ideas. Instead of berating the poor performance by his team, he instead took the opportunity to use his post match interview to bemoan the treatment of the injured Eden Hazard by his medical team.

Like many geniuses, the Portuguese has his flaws. Whilst understandably frustrated at the display by his team, the medical team were encouraged onto the pitch by the referee, not once but twice. This mattered not to Jose. A control freak, and strongly loyal Mourinho has traits not to dissimilar to the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. Get on the wrong side of him, and you may not get a second chance.

Eva Carniero and Jon Fearn were bizarrely banished from the bench, and common sense seems to have disappeared from the Chelsea hierarchy. Instead of stepping in, and calmly reminding Mourinho that the doctors were quite within the right to perform their duties, they allowed him to dictate. With all the headlines building up through the week, preparation for one of the toughest away matches of the season was far from ideal.

Understandably at the pre-game press conference, the media quite rightly questioned the actions following the Swansea game. Mourinho, however, was having none of it. Instead, he launched a bizarre attack on Arsene Wenger and his record as Arsenal manager.

Tough time for Chelsea

The performance at City was not something he will want to watch again in a hurry. The tone for the match was set within the first thirty seconds, when Aguero was set clean through by Silva only to be denied by Begovic. By half time, his side was thankful to Begovic that they were only 1-0. The Bosnian denied the Argentine on a number of occasions. Fate then intervened.

Met from ironic chants from the City fans, the newly called upon Chelsea medical staff were called into action twice within a matter of moments. Gary Cahill required attention to a bloodied nose, caused whilst defending a corner by his own keeper. This was swiftly followed by a borderline decision when Fernandinho appeared to elbow Costa in the head, however was only awarded a yellow card.

Already treating the injured Cahill, the City medical team was forced into action to assist Chelsea. Half time could not have come soon enough for Jose’s men. Mourinho reacted, and for the first team in a Premier League match he hauled off his captain replacing him with Kurt Zouma.

Although they started the second half brightly and had plenty of possession, Chelsea rarely threatened the City backline. Poor marking and simply being outmuscled by his opponent, Kompany got the better of Ivanovic to make it 2-0.

Shortly after Juan Cuadrado’s poor positioning allowed a Fernandinho thunderbolt to seal the three points for the early pace setters. City means business, and Mourinho learnt the hard way. This, was not however the end of the erratic behaviour of the “Chosen One”. In his post match interview, he chose to state that his team had been on the end of a fake result.

From mocking rival managers records’, doctor gate to the performance and following comments at City, something is not right within the world of Mourinho and Chelsea. Even the most ardent and loyal of Chelsea fans, would have struggled to understand Jose Mourinho’s actions over the last few weeks. With his rivals spending big to help catch up to last seasons champions, this may be Jose Mourinho’s calculated effort to bring in more players; he clearly feels that the team needs.

With Mourinho, you just never know. The season is still in it’s infancy, and Chelsea will still be among the challengers despite the five-point gap between themselves and the top.

Clearly a talented manager, arguably the best in the world, Mourinho is not one to shy away from controversy. One thing is for certain; nothing is quiet when he’s around.
