Moyes: Time will tell if Rooney will stay

Manchester United boss David Moyes was non-committal when responding to comments by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho suggesting that Wayne Rooney could leave the club, telling reporters that “only time” will tell if Rooney’s future is in Manchester.

“Everybody has their style. I wouldn’t talk about other managers at other clubs and I wouldn’t talk about other players at other clubs,” said Moyes when questioned over Mourinho’s comments.

“I can’t tell you what his motivation is but only time will give you an answer about Wayne. The club will deal with that – they will do all they need to do, no question.”

Moyes takes his United side to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Sunday, although they will be without the injured Rooney. Mourinho unsuccessfully attempted to sign Rooney in the summer and had suggested that United may sell him to a foreign side in the summer.

“Manchester United made it clear in the summer that they don’t swap or sell players to their direct rivals,” Mourinho said earlier in the week.

“They were clear in the way they approached the Rooney situation. For them it’s pretty clear – they don’t swap and they don’t sell.

“I think this summer United will try and sell Rooney to a non-direct rival, but they were very clear about not selling to Chelsea.”

Rooney has either scored or assisted 51% of United’s goals this season
