Following the comments made by Jose Mourinho about Wayne Rooney last week, David Moyes has been quoted in the press this morning and his quotes will add fuel to the fire about the England striker’s future in Manchester.
With the World Cup approaching next year, this is a big season for all those players looking to make the squad to Brazil and Rooney is one of those players.
David Moyes is quoted as saying:
“Overall, my thought on Wayne is, if for any reasons we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we’ll need him. Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. It’s going to be a time to see how I work with Wayne. Manchester United isn’t about Wayne Rooney. Manchester United is about the team – the club. I won’t allow Wayne Rooney to become more important than the football club and the football team, because that’s the heart of it.”
Now if I was a Manchester United fan, I would find these comments confusing. In one breath Moyes stated Wayne Rooney is NOT for sale and the club wouldn’t entertain any bid for his services and now he openly states that he will be used this season as “cover” for Van Persie.
His comments have only added fuel to the fire for people like me to speculate about Rooney once again.
We all know Jose Mourinho is a massive fan. We know that some of the biggest clubs in the world will be interested in the player if he was to become available and you would have to question how Rooney himself feels about the latest comments made by Moyes? Surely, Rooney cannot be happy with being described as a backup this season?
Could these comments become the catalyst for Rooney to hand in an official transfer request after all?
Let’s wait and see.
