My England career will be 'pointless' without trophies - Wayne Rooney

Faisal

Wayne Rooney has claimed that his career would be ‘pointless’ if he doesn’t win any trophies for his country. The 27-year-old wants to judge his England career with the achievements of his team rather than his personal achievements.

The Manchester United striker, who won his 81st cap for England in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Republic of Ireland, is 44 caps short of Peter Shilton’s record of 125 and he needs to score just 14 more goals to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49.

Rooney said: “Some people talk about records but I’m not really too fussed. I think it (recent form) could be a little bit better. If we could’ve turned one or two of those draws into wins, we’d be in a great position. I’ve always felt that, to be successful, you have to win trophies. I could end my career with England as record goalscorer and maybe even record caps-holder but, if you’re not going to be successful, then it’s pointless. I play for England to try and help England be successful, that’s the aim. It’s not to see how many caps or goals I can get, it’s to see if I can get a winner’s medal.”
