What’s the story?

Former Real Madrid and current Arsenal player Mesut Ozil is looking for a return to the Spanish capital, says reports in Spain. The midfielder, in an interview with Sports Bild spoke about his former club, “Of course my heart beats for Real,” he said. “I played there and still have many friends to this day in the team and in the club. Therefore I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Real, even against Bayern.”

The German moved to Arsenal in 2013, when Carlo Ancelotti took over as manager for the Madrid giants. He has endured a topsy-turvy time at the London club, and thinks that he often gets “singled out” when the team doesn’t do well.

“When the team’s on a bad run, somebody needs to be singled out, sadly most of the time it’s me”, and with his contract running out in 2018, the German might be looking for pastures new.

The heart of the matter

Mesut Ozil’s contract situation at Arsenal has admittedly garnered a lot of eye balls. The general feeling is that the German despite his talent, has never been truly appreciated at the Emirates.

With the uncertainty surrounding Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and a number of first team players (Alexis Sanchez, Jack Wilshere), it is undoubtedly a situation of turn moil. With that in mind, the World Cup winner might be looking to make a change after four seasons at the Premier League club.

What’s Next?

The future of James Rodriguez and Isco at Real Madrid is anyone's guess, and those are two specialist players Real Madrid lose for a position. Mesut Ozil is someone who will be perfect for the position, and given that he is in the last year of his contract at Arsenal, he would cost considerably less than other replacements for the squad.

Mesut Ozil has even previously admitted that he is a big fan of the current Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, “I have watched a lot of games involving Zidane. He was one of the most clever players in the world. He was able to read the game and direct play without any unnecessary tricks and showboating. That's what makes him so special.”

The ground work is definitely laid.

Author’s Take

Given, the position Mesut play in, and his ability on the ball, if you surround him with players who are willing runners off the ball, he can almost be unplayable. He has showcased that form for Real Madrid and Germany in the past, and at 28-years might be approaching the peak of his career.

He knows the club and the players, and more importantly, he had a telepathic understanding with Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Real. If Real Madrid want it, this could really happen. Sorry Arsenal fans, maybe Alexis Sanchez would stay (Ohh wait..).
