Host Nawa Jana Jagriti Youth Club lifted the title of the Fifth edition of the Simara Gold Cup football tournament defeating Birgunj United Club 2-1 in the final held at the Simara Stadium in Bara in Eastern Nepal. Simara Gold Cup is the prestigious football tournament held annually in Eastern Nepal.
Both teams scored a goal each during the regular playing time. Pradeep Maharjan scored through a sublime free-kick in the 55th minute of the match to put the hosts ahead while Suraj Lama scored the equalizer for Birgunj United in the 83rd minute of the match.
The match went to extra time as the score was 1-1 in regulation time. Oladipo Afeez scored the winner for the hosts in the third minute of the added 20 minutes of extra time.
The winner bagged home the prize of NRs 400,000 while the runner-up received NRs 200,000.
Pradeep Maharjan, of the hosts, was named the best midfielder and the hosts’ coach Jeevan Lama won the best coach award of the tournament. Likewise, Birgunj’s Dilip Chhetri was judged best goalkeeper and Jana Jagriti´s Suraj Thing was judged best defender of the tournament. Nepal Police Club´s Bharat Shah and Bijay Gurung were the joint top scorers with three goals. Nepal police Club bagged the fair play award of the tournaments.
Total of 12 teams including 8 top division clubs of Nepal participated in the tournament. The top clubs of Nepal failed to reach the final of the tournament.
