Cristiano Ronaldo has inspired a group of astronomers to such an extent that they have named a new galaxy which was recently discovered as CR7. A galaxy with the signature of first-generation stars was recently discovered and it is believed to have been existing when the universe was just 800 million years old according to a paper published in The Astrophysical Journal, as reported by New York Times.
Dr. David Sobral from the University of Lisbon in Portugal, who led the crew of astronomers which made the discovery, said that the name of the galaxy is Galaxy CR7 — short for Cosmos Redshift 7 or CR7. This is because of the method used to date the distant objects in the universe.
But Dr. Sobral also said that the galaxy’s name was partly inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, who is popularly known in the football world as CR7. The Real Madrid star is called CR7 since his Manchester United days as it combines his initials CR with the jersey number 7 that he inherited when he was at Old Trafford.
It is believed that the galaxy CR7 has been travelling for an astonishing 12.9 billion years. The astronomers say that the galaxy is part of a lost generation of stars which carried light into the universe after Big Bang.
This in turn kick-started the process of creation of elements which was needed for life as well as for planets and then disappeared.
These stars are believed to be more than hundreds and thousand times more massive than the sun itself. In short, the astronomers believe that light came into the world through these galaxies and also had a part to play in the formation of life and planets.
To some extent, and by the scientist’s own admission, Cristiano Ronaldo has been immortalized forever as CR7 – just like the galaxy.
