Luis Enrique was appointed the head coach after the exit from World Cup in the Round of 16. Spanish FA sacked Julen Lopetegui just before the start of the World Cup and it is considered to be one of the main reasons behind Spain's failure at the world cup. After the appointment of Luis Enrique, it marks a new era for Spain. The ex Barcelona and Roma head coach is known for his tactical nous. Spain has matches lined up against England and Croatia in UEFA Nations league.
Spain will play their first fixture on 09/08 against England and then against Croatia on 09/11. The Spain squad has been announced through a video. Let's take a look at the squad list:
Goal Keepers
David De Gea, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Pau Lopéz
Defenders
Dani Carvajal, Cesar Azpilicueta, Raul Albiol, Diego Llorente, Nacho Fernando, Sergio Ramos, Marcos Alonso, Luis Gayá
Midfielders
Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, Rodrigo, Saúl Niguez, Thiago Alcantara, Dani Ceballos, Íñigo Martínez
Forwards
Isco, Marco Asensio, Alvaro Morata, Diego Costa, Suso, Rodrigo Moreno
There are some surprises on the list. The most shocking exclusion is Jordi Alba. Chelsea's Marcos Alonso and Valencia's Luis Gayà were included instead. After the retirement of Iniesta, David Silva and Pique, some major overhauls were expected. Ramos and Nacho are expected to be the preferred centre-backs.
Sergi Roberto has been reinstated in the team. Midfielder Íñigo Martínez has been included in the squad after an impressive season at Athletic Bilbao. Morata and Suso have been given another chance to impress. Suso had a great last 18 months at AC Milan, thus his inclusion makes sense.
Some youngsters have got their maiden call from Spain. Atlético Madrid youngster Rodri and Real Sociedad’s Diego Llorente have been included in the squad. Though, it's highly unlikely that they will get a chance to prove themselves.
Luis Enrique will be trying to implement his tactics. We will have to wait to see the results.
