#1 Jonjo Shelvey
Jonjo Shelvey will probably be given a lot of credit for his equalising goal alone; it was a brilliantly taken strike from the midfielder, although it must be said that he was given far too much room to pick his spot by the Manchester City defence. But outside of his goal, Shelvey performed admirably today as Newcastle’s captain, and worked hard throughout the game despite his side lacking possession.
Newcastle looked dangerous throughout the game with their attacks on the break, but often, the attacking trio of Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and in particular, Allan Saint-Maximin were very wasteful in possession, either running into blind alleys or picking the wrong pass. With more intelligent attacks, the Magpies could have easily won this game.
Steve Bruce should still be proud of Shelvey’s performance, though. Despite City limiting his side to just 23% of the possession, Shelvey completed 29 passes, with 86% accuracy, and provided one key pass. His defensive work was also strong, as he registered 3 successful tackles, 3 clearances and 4 interceptions. He’s still inconsistent, but this was one of his best performances of the season so far.
