Real Madrid ace Vinicius Jr has been named The Best Men's Player of the Year for 2024 at the FIFA The Best Awards. The Brazil international has claimed the gong on the back of an impressive campaign in the colors of Los Blancos.
Vinicius Jr was left fuming after he missed out on the 2024 Ballon d'Or to Manchester City midfielder Rodri last month, but there was no such thing this time around. The 24-year-old was an overwhelming favorite to emerge as the winner of the award. It is determined by public vote, journalists, national team managers, and captains from each country.
Vinicius Jr succeeds Inter Miami ace Lionel Messi in winning the award after the Argentine great won it in each of the last two years. He picks up his first major individual honor after his Ballon d'Or disappointment.
Real Madrid and their players boycotted the Ballon d'Or gala last month, but it wasn't the case this time as Vinicius Jr picked up his award in Doha. The Best Men's Player of the Year was awarded for performances between August 2023 and August 2024, essentially the 2023-24 season and the following summer.
The Real Madrid man scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists in 39 games across competitions. He helped his club win the UEFA Champions League, Supercopa de Espana and LaLiga titles. He scored in the Champions League final and also scored a hat-trick in the Supercopa de Espana final. He won the award by five votes, picking up 48 votes to 43 for Rodri, who finished in second place. Jude Bellingham was third with 37 votes.
Vinicius Jr and his Los Blancos teammates are in Doha, where they will face Mexican outfit Pachuca in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on Wednesday.
Real Madrid manager named Coach of the Year
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has been named the 2024 FIFA The Best Men's Coach of the Year after an excellent 2023-24 season. The Italian manager picks up the award for the first time since its inception in 2016, with a second-place finish in 2022 his previous best.
Ancelotti led Los Blancos to win LaLiga, Supercopa de Espana, and the UEFA Champions League during the 2023-24 season, further extending his legacy. It was his fifth UEFA Champions League title as a manager, having won it twice with AC Milan.
Ancelotti becomes the second Italian after Claudio Ranieri in 2016 to pick up the prestigious award. He also won the Coach of the Year award at the Ballon d'Or gala in November, having also led Los Blancos to win the Supercopa de Espana and UEFA Super Cup.
