Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. beat Manchester City's Rodri to the 2024 FIFA The Best Men's Player of the Year award at the gala in Doha. The pair were at the top of the rankings of nominees for the award this year, with eight other players making up the top 10.
Vinicius Jr did not attend the 2024 Ballon d'Or gala in November after missing out on the award but was present in Doha for this event. The Brazil international was joined by a number of his Real Madrid teammates in the top 10 of the award. Voting was conducted on the back of performances between August 2023 and August 2024 by public vote, one journalist, national team manager, and captain from each country.
The Real Madrid forward won The Best Men's Player of the Year award with 48 votes, while Rodri was a close second with 43 votes. Jude Bellingham was third with 37 votes after an excellent debut season with Los Blancos, and Dani Carvajal was fourth with 31 votes.
Barcelona and Spain youngster Lamine Yamal finished fifth with 30 votes, five more than his idol and three-time winner Lionel Messi, who was sixth. Retired midfielder Toni Kroos and City striker Erling Haaland both had 18 points apiece to rank seventh and eighth. Kylian Mbappe placed ninth with 14 points, and Florian Wirtz completed the top 10 with eight points.
Vinicius Jr finds redemption with FIFA The Best Men's Player of the Year win
Real Madrid ace Vinicius Jr has been redeemed after emerging as the winner of the 2024 FIFA The Best Men's Player of the Year award. The Brazil international succeeds Lionel Messi in winning the award after the 37-year-old won it in 2022 and 2023.
Vinicius Jr claims the award after narrowly missing out on the Ballon d'Or to Manchester City man Rodri. He lost the award voted for by journalists last month by only 41 points, an extremely tight contest.
The Real Madrid man had been named in the FIFPro World XI for 2024 alongside Rodri earlier this month. With top performances in the UEFA Champions League, Supercopa de Espana, and LaLiga triumphs for his side, he earned the biggest award of his career so far.
