Manchester United frontman Rasmus Hojlund has slammed a fan online for questioning former coach Erik ten Hag's decision to sign the Danish youngster. The Red Devils signed the 21-year-old centre-forward from Atalanta BC in 2023 for a reported transfer price of a whopping €73.90 million.
So far, Hojlund has racked up 23 goals and three assists in 64 appearances across competitions for United. However, the Dane has been underwhelming this season, registering just seven goals and a solitary assist in 21 games. Furthermore, he hasn't been impressive in the Premier League, scoring just two goals in 13 appearances this season.
The string of disappointing performances has resulted in Hojlund drawing criticism from United fans on social media. It reached its boiling point on Friday, December 27, when a post claimed that the youngster was only brought to the club due to his connection with Erik ten Hag. Written by Instagram user @utdfamee, the post claimed that Ten Hag "needs to be trialed in court" and imprisoned for bringing Hojlund to the club.
The Dane replied in the user's private message, which was later shared on X. Hojlund wrote:
“Hi, I find your post a bit disturbing, mate. You are right to have your opinion, but stop talking about things you know nothing about. That is all.”
At present, Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League table with just 22 points in 18 games. Amorim's side are 20 points behind Liverpool, who are at the summit of the Premier League table with a game in hand.
Michael Owen says Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund is playing the 'hardest position' in the Premier League
Michael Owen sympathized with Rasmus Hojlund after Manchester United succumbed to a 2-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium on Boxing Day.
The former Manchester United striker spoke about Hojlund's woes on the Premier League Productions. According to him, the team's game plan jeopardizes Hojlund's gameplay, making it an ordeal for him to make an impact. He said (via Metro):
"Hojlund… I feel so sorry for the lad. That first half, six passes he received, four of them from defenders so in other words four of them are probably hopeful, long passes and two passes in the first half from a player who you would want to receive a pass off. And he’s supposed to do something with that."
Owen added:
"I can’t judge him as a player, I don’t know if he’s good or bad, and that’s the most damning thing you could say because after watching him for a year, I just feel as if he’s playing in possibly the hardest position in the Premier League to play in at the moment – centre forward for Manchester United – I never thought I’d be saying that."
Describing the position of a Manchester United striker as a 'poisoned chalice,' Owen concluded:
"Centre forward for Manchester United used to be the dream for every centre forward in the world, scoring dozens and dozens of goals, and now it’s a poisoned chalice. And I never thought I’d be saying that."
United will next play Newcastle United at Old Trafford on December 30, which will also be the last game of the year for both teams. Hojlund will look to get on the scoresheet to end the year on a high.
