"Absolutely unbelievable" - Jurgen Klopp singles out Liverpool star for massive praise after brilliant victory against Manchester City

Jurgen Klopp waxed lyrical about James Milner after Liverpool's 1-0 Premier League win against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday (October 16).

The Reds were forced to play the 36-year-old central midfielder at right-back due to injury issues in their defense. Trent Alexander-Arnold was only fit to make the bench while Calvin Ramsay, who is yet to make his debut for the club, was sidelined with an injury.

Joe Gomez has been a makeshift right-back in Trent's absence. However, his services were required alongside Virgil van Dijk due to injuries to Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip.

When the starting lineup was released, a majority of Liverpool fans were anxious to see Milner paired up against a tricky customer like Phil Foden. However, the former City star kept his compatriot quiet down that flank for the majority of the game.

Foden thought he had scored in the 53rd minute before the goal was ruled out for a foul by Erling Haaland on Fabinho. It was the England international's only notable moment in the game.

Milner put in a mammoth shift in defense and held his own against world-class dribblers like Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva when he came up against them. Klopp was particularly pleased with Milner's display.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, the German tactician told LFC TV:

"...I am pretty sure before the game a lot of people thought, ‘Oh, James Milner against Phil Foden.’ The way James Milner played was absolutely unbelievable."

Alexander-Arnold came on in the 90th minute to double up with Milner down the right flank and give Liverpool that extra bit of protection in defense. The Reds managed to keep a clean sheet and record arguably their most important win so far this season.

Jurgen Klopp not happy about Liverpool forward's injury in win vs Manchester City

The only negative for Liverpool in their momentous win against the Cityzens was Diogo Jota's injury. The Portugal international went down with minimal contact in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

After spending nearly two minutes on the pitch receiving treatment, he was stretchered off to be replaced by Kostas Tsimikas. Speaking after the game, Klopp did not seem too happy about the incident and told the aforementioned source:

"Diogo, I wish I wouldn’t have to talk about it. I saw it on the side on the screen, I am the first who saw it.
"When I saw he goes down and there was not a lot of contact, you can see a little bit that somebody kicks his foot and maybe the muscle got overstretched, 96 minutes, that’s not good for the muscle. He felt it immediately and now we have to wait to see how bad it is."
