Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham reckons Wayne Rooney should return to the club as a striking coach. He believes the Englishman could help the likes of Rasmus Hojlund excel.
Rooney is a Red Devils legend and their all-time top scorer with 253 goals and 139 assists in 559 games. He won numerous trophies with the club before leaving in 2017 and eventually retiring in 2021. Since then, he's tried his hands at being a manager but has failed at multiple clubs. He was recently sacked by Plymouth Argyle.
Sheringham believes Manchester United should appoint Rooney as a striking coach to help the likes of Rasmus Hojlund. He said (via Goal):
"Would Wayne Rooney be a good striking coach? Without a doubt. I think it is a very important role nowadays. There are set-piece coaches, back four coaches, striker coaches and Wayne's been one of the top players in the country.
"Could he help Rasmus Hojlund? Of course. He's an experienced player that's played for his country a hundred times and scored goals at the top level. So any advice from him you would have to listen to."
Hojlund has struggled at Manchester United since his £72 million move from Atalanta in 2023. He's scored just 23 goals and contributed three assists in 66 appearances.
Wes Brown also recently urged Wayne Rooney to join Manchester United as a coach
In a recent interview, former Manchester United defender Wes Brown also spoke about Wayne Rooney potentially joining the club as a coach. The former Everton man has had tough times in his role as a manager at the likes of Derby County and Birmingham City.
Many believe Rooney should work in a coaching role before becoming the main manager of a club. Wes Brown said:
“If Wayne wanted to spend time as a striking coach he would be absolutely brilliant at it, he was one of the best goal scorers we’ve ever seen and was a top playmaker as well. If Wayne was on hand to give out some advice I’m sure everyone would be willing to listen."
“If he wanted to do that he would be very good on movement and things like that, he was one of the best to do it. Could he help Rasmus Hojlund at United? I think all young strikers would love to listen to Wayne and his knowledge.”
Manchester United do have a serious issue in attack as they've scored just 23 goals in 20 Premier League games this season. Only four other clubs have scored fewer.
