New Liverpool manager Arne Slot has turned to former club Feyenoord to make his first appointment. The Dutch tactician has been appointed as the replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield following the German's departure.
Slot emerged as the first-choice target for Liverpool as they looked to replace Klopp, who announced his exit from the club earlier in the season. The Reds had looked at appointing Xabi Alonso before deciding to move for Slot after the Spaniard chose to remain with Bayer Leverkusen.
Slot was confirmed by Liverpool shortly after the conclusion of the season, and has now made his first acquisition as manager of the Reds. He has poached Ruben Peeters from Feyenoord to become the first-team physical performance coach at Anfield.
Slot will be assisted at Anfield by Sipke Hulshoff, who was his assistant at Feyenoord, as well. The exits of Jurgen Klopp's assistants along with him have left the club needing to make multiple appointments to fill their backroom staff.
Peeters is the first one in, having worked with Slot as head of performance at Feyenoord for three years. He also previously worked as a physical coach for Belgian Jupiler League giants KRC Genk.
Peeters will take on the roles of Andreas Schlumberger and Andreas Kornmayer, both of whom left the club with Klopp. Schlumberger was head of fitness and conditioning and Kornmayer was head of recovery and performance, but both roles have been merged into one for Peeters.
Arne Slot's backroom staff is still taking shape, with some time left before the start of pre-season; the club are looking to hire experts in a number of positions.
Liverpool eye Atalanta star as first Arne Slot signing - Reports
Liverpool are eyeing a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after his impressive season with the UEFA Europa League champions. The Reds want to sign him as they look to strengthen their midfield after a disappointing end to the season.
Arne Slot's new side have been left needing midfield cover after Thiago Alcantara left the club for free at the end of the season. They tried to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia last summer but failed, and are now in the market for another central midfielder.
CaughtOffside reports that Liverpool were left impressed by the 24-year-old after his tenacious display in midfield against them. Ederson has scored seven goals and provided one assist in 52 games across competitions this season and could be just what the Reds need in the heart of their midfield.
