Arsenal defender William Saliba's agents have reportedly responded positively to Real Madrid's interest in the player. The 23-year-old has been attracting serious interest from the LaLiga giants who are eager to add him to their ranks.
Saliba has emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe following his impressive displays with the Gunners in recent seasons. The Frenchman joined Arsenal in 2019 from Saint-Etienne but failed to land a spot in the first team. He went on loan spells at Saint-Etienne, Nice, and Marseille before returning to the Emirates in 2022 to become a key member of Mikel Arteta's side.
With Saliba playing in the heart of Arsenal's defense, the club has become a major league title contender and boasts one of the best defensive setups in the English top flight. The significant improvements have notably earned the French international recognition from several top European clubs, including Real Madrid.
Los Blancos are keen to bolster their defense following an injury crisis this season. As per Spanish media outlet Sport, they have identified Saliba as a priority signing. However, to land the French centre-back, Madrid must be willing to offer a sizeable fee that would break the bank.
The report adds that while the Gunners have no intention of selling Saliba, his agents have given a positive response to Real Madrid. The Spanish club plans to offer a fee upwards of £83 million for Saliba and expects him to hand in a transfer request. The deal could see him become the most expensive defender of all time, surpassing the £80 million that Manchester United paid Leicester City for Harry Maguire in 2019.
Saliba is on contract at the Emirates until June 2027. He has made 26 appearances across competitions for the side this term, contributing two goals.
Gabriel Martinelli says Arsenal teammate is irreplaceable after New Year's Day victory over Brentford
Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli spoke highly of teammate Bukayo Saka after his side's win over Brentford on Tuesday (January 1). Mikel Arteta's side secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over the Bees away from home.
Saka did not make the match-day squad as he is out with a hamstring injury and is not expected to return until March. Martinelli scored his side's third goal in the 53rd minute after goals from Gabriel Jesus (29') and Mike Merino (50') canceled out Bryan Mbeumo's 13th-minute strike.
Speaking with TNT Sports after the game, Martinelli was asked if the team felt more pressure in attack without Saka. He replied (via Metro):
"No-one can replace him, he’s one of the best players in the world. But we know the team we have, we trust ourselves and we will try our best. I’m sure he is happy with the result."
The victory over Brentford saw the Gunners close the gap on Liverpool to six points. They will next play against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (January 4).
