Spanish giants Barcelona are looking to sign a midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window, according to recent reports. Many fans and pundits had initially claimed that the Catalan giants would focus solely on registrations and renewals in January because of their financial troubles.

However, the tables may turn very soon as President Joan Laporta is on the verge of signing a deal with a Qatari fund, thereby causing an influx of more than €100 million for the club to spend on strengthening the side. The economic lever reportedly deals with the sale of tickets for the VIP boxes in the renovated Camp Nou. The deal would also help the side return to the 1:1 rule as per the Financial Fair Play regulations of LaLiga.

According to a report by Diario SPORT (h/t Barca Universal), Barcelona's new deal might make way for them to sign a midfielder in January. However, the Catalan giants aren't looking for permanent deals and will likely consider a loan move.

The report also reveals that Hansi Flick has specifically asked for reinforcements in the holding midfield role. Although Marc Casado has established himself as one of the mainstays in the lineup, Flick believes that he doesn't have a replacement in the side.

However, finding a defensive midfielder with the right skill set and contractual situation will be difficult for them. It remains to be seen what options Sporting Director Deco and his team come up with in January.

Barcelona will reportedly sell estranged midfielder Frenkie de Jong at a discounted price if the Dutchman doesn't sign a new contract at the club. De Jong's current contract fetches him a whopping €484,615 per week and will expire in the summer of 2026.

De Jong was injured for a total of 199 days this year and missed several matches for both club and country. He hasn't been able to make a mark under newly appointed manager Hansi Flick despite his recent return to fitness. He has made just 13 appearances under the German tactician this season, scoring a goal and an assist each across competitions

According to a report by SPORT (via Barca Universal), the Catalan giants will sell the Dutchman if he doesn't agree to sign a new contract. The management is also considering a comparatively lower transfer fee for the midfielder.

The report also suggests that De Jong will be required to agree to a reduced salary if he agrees to sign a new contract with Barcelona. If the talks don't come to fruition, Hansi Flick will reportedly bench him for the entirety of the 2025-26 season.
