Barcelona Femeni superstar Aitana Bonmati has carried over her success from 2023 into this year as she was named the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year. The Spanish midfielder beat five other nominees to emerge as the winner of the prestigious award for 2024.
Bonmati starred for her club and the Spain Women's national team in 2023, helping them win a glut of trophies. Her dazzling displays from midfield earned her a maiden Ballon d'Or as the world's best footballer.
Bonmati was one of six nominees announced for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award earlier this year. Athletics stars Sha'Carri Richardson, Faith Kipyegon, and Shericka Jackson made the list, as did tennis star Iga Swiatek and Mikaela Shiffrin.
In an event held in Madrid, Aitana Bonmati has now been announced as the recipient of the award, adding a further feather to her cap. The highly-rated midfielder has joined the likes of Serena Williams and Simone Biles in winning the award for the first time.
Aitana Bonmati set to feature for Barcelona in UWCL showdown against Chelsea
Reigning Ballon d'Or holder Aitana Bonmati is in line to feature for reigning champions Barcelona Femeni when they visit Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea Women on Saturday. The Spanish midfielder was in action for the Spanish giants in the first leg at the Barcelona Olympic Stadium.
Chelsea handed the Spanish giants a first home defeat since 2019 when a goal from Erin Cuthbert sealed a 1-0 win for them in Spain. In what is a rematch of last year's semi-final, Barca are keen to exact revenge in London on Saturday.
Bonmati and her teammates will face Levante Las Planas in the league on Wednesday before proceeding to London for the crunch clash. They will look to retain their UEFA Women's Champions League title and avoid any shocks.
