Barcelona's Fermin Lopez has sent a message to Lamine Yamal after the 5-2 win over Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final. The two Spanish heavyweights locked horns for the second time this season on Sunday, January 12, at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.
Los Blancos arrived at the game as the team in form and took the lead in the fifth minute through Kylian Mbappe. However, Yamal got the Catalans back in the game in the 22nd minute.
Latching onto Robert Lewandowski's first-time pass, the 17-year-old danced past Ferland Mendy and Aurelien Tchouameni to roll the ball into the far corner. It marked the start of a stunning comeback from Barcelona, who went ahead through Lewandowski's penalty in the 36th minute.
Raphinha got on the scoresheet three minutes later, and Alejandro Balde made in 4-1 late in the first half injury time. Raphinha scored his second of the night after the break, and Rodrygo's goal later in the night turned out to be a mere consolation.
Following the win, Yamal shared a picture of him with the trophy on social media. Lopez was quick to respond, calling his countryman 'the king.'
"Brother you are the king," wrote Lopez.
Barcelona also secured a 4-0 win over Real Madrid last October at the Santiago Bernabeu in the league.
When does Lamine Yamal's contract with Barcelona expire?
Lamine Yamal's contract with Barcelona expires in just over 18 months and the situation has alerted clubs across the continent. The Spaniard has been outstanding for the Catalans so far and was decisive once again on Sunday.
Yamal has registered eight goals and 12 assists from 23 games across competitions for the LaLiga giants this season. He remains a key figure under Hansi Flick and also won Euro 2024 with Spain last summer.
Speaking recently to CNN, Yamal confirmed that he will sign a new deal with Barcelona soon.
“I don’t know when [the contract will be signed], but I believe it’ll be soon. In the end, Barca is the club of my life. I hope to renew my contract with them and to be with them as long as possible. I want to play in the Spanish league. I want to play for Barca, and yes, I will renew my contract. I will," said Yamal via Forbes.
The Supercopa de Espana is Yamal's second trophy with the Catalans. He also won the League with the club in the 2022-23 campaign.
