England fans were left disappointed with the performance of defender Kyle Walker in their 2-1 extra time win over Slovakia in the Euro 2024 last-16. The Three Lions came from behind to book their place in the last-eight, avoiding a shock exit.
Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate opted to make one change to his XI for the game in Gelsenkirchen, starting Kobbie Mainoo ahead of Conor Gallagher. The manager retained most of the players that featured in the group stage.
England struggled for much of the encounter, failing to record a shot on target until the 95th minute of a largely lackluster performance. Fans took Manchester City man Kyle Walker as their scapegoat, calling out his 'dreadful' performance in the game against Slovakia.
Fans shared their opinions via X, mostly criticising the experienced right-back.
A fan slammed Walker for being consistently poor for club and country.
"Walker did it all year mate he’s very poor"
Another fan questioned his contributions in big games.
"We need to have a conversation about Walker in big games"
One fan wrote that if not for his pace, Walker isn't a Premier League-level player.
"His pace bails him out an awful lot, without that he wouldn't be playing premier league level."
Kyle Walker ended the game as captain of the side after regular captain Harry Kane was taken off in extra time. The Manchester City man played his man inside for the Slovakia goal, partly the reason why he was blamed by fans.
England come from behind to avoid surprise Euro 2024 exit
England had to dig deep and come from a goal down to defeat Slovakia 2-1 and reach the quarterfinals of Euro 2024. The Three Lions overcame their opponents to book a meeting with Switzerland in the last-eight.
Slovakia took a shock lead in the first half when Ivan Schranz scored his third goal of the tournament with a fine finish. The English looked bereft of ideas for much of the first half but came alive in the second. Phil Foden scored but was in an offside position, while Declan Rice struck the woodwork with a fine shot from outside the box.
With a minute of added time left, Jude Bellingham pulled off an impressive acrobatic effort to draw his side level. A minute into extra time, Kane scored his second of the tournament to put the game to bed and book England's ticket to the next round.
