“Can he just retire already?”, “Messi would’ve drilled it” - Fans react as Cristiano Ronaldo misses crucial penalty vs Slovenia in Euro 2024 win

Fans on X erupted as Cristiano Ronaldo missed a crucial against Slovenia in extra time in Portugal's Euro 2024 Round of 16 win on Monday (July 1) in Frankfurt. Portugal were awarded a penalty in the 105th minute after Vanja Drkusic had tripped and fouled Diogo Jota in the box.

Ronaldo came forward to break the deadlock, but Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced a superb save diving to his left to deny the Portuguese. The Al-Nassr star was spotted in tears in the pitch after his miss.

Although Portugal eventually won the shootout 3-0 to reach the Euro 2024 quarterfinal, fans took to X to criticise Ronaldo for his missed penalty. Here are some of the reactions:

After his miss, Cristiano Ronaldo, though, stepped up and converted the first one for Portugal during the shootout. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva converted the next two, while Diogo Costa saved all three from Slovenia, leading A Selecao to the quarterffinal.

They next face France on July 5 in the Euro 2024 quarterfinal at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains scoreless in Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to find the net in the group stage, marking the first time the five-time Ballon D'or winner didb't score in the group stage of a major international tournament in 11 attempts.

He was unable to score against Slovenia in the Round of 16 as well, although he was one of the three penalty takers for Portugal during the shootout and converted his effort. During the Euro 2024 Round of 16 clash vs Slovenia, Ronaldo missed multiple free-kick opportunities to give Portugal the lead.

In the Euro 2024 group stage, Ronaldo performed the best in the Selecao's 3-0 win against Turkey. The Al-Nassr star set up the third goal for Bruno Fernandes as Roberto Martinez's side won the group to reach the knockouts.

Despite his struggles at Euro 2024 Cristiano Ronaldo, with his assist to Fernandes, became the joint assist- provider in Euro history, level with Czechia's Karol Poborsky (right).

Cristiano Ronaldo is also the highest goalscorer in the history of the tournament with 14. Fans will have all eyes on Portugal's showdown against France in the quarterfinal as Ronaldo looks to become the first player to score in six different Euros and the oldest player to score in the Euro finals.
