“Can’t hack it against a League 2 side”, “It’s time he moves on” - Liverpool fans want 25-year-old sold despite 4-0 win vs Accrington Stanley

Liverpool cruised past Accrington Stanley 4-0 in the FA Cup Third Round on Saturday, but fans were unhappy with Darwin Nunez for drawing another blank. The Uruguayan started as their centre-forward at Anfield and mustered five shots, but only one of them was on target, and it was saved.

It hasn't been a good season for Nunez, who has scored only four goals in 26 games in all competitions. Today, he was presented with a good opportunity to bag a few more and perhaps even stake a claim in the starting XI. However, the 25-year-old flattered to deceive. His only saving grace of the game was an assist for Diogo Jota, who broke the deadlock for the home side after 29 minutes into the kick-off.

Regardless, the fact that Nunez was unable to score even against fourth-tier minnows like Accrington, really irked the supporters. Some of them went as far as calling to get him sold. Here are some best reactions on X:

One user by the name Nation was of the opinion that Liverpool needed a better man to lead them from the front:

"Four goals in 25 appearances for Darwin Nunez is not something Liverpool want from their striker. We need a better striker"

A verified Liverpool supporter called Spion Kop quipped that 18-year-old Jayden Danns was better than Nunez:

To the above tweet, BURRIDGE replied:

"He actually is. As much as I want Nunez to do well, it’s just not going to happen. It’s time he moves on."

Another user named matt, echoed his sentiments, tweeting:

"Not even exaggerating mate, he’s got a strikers instinct, something I dont think Nunez will ever have."

Upon watching Nunez miss two chances in 12 minutes, another user tweeted:

"Nunez 2 big chances missed already in just 12 mins. can’t hack it against a league 2 side"

RYAN made an emphatic statement that Liverpool fans might have run out of patience with the striker:

"It's so over for Darwin Nunez unfortunately, I think the penny has finally dropped with the majority of the fan base."

A fan blog called LFC Transfers tweeted:

"As much as it pains me to say this but I think Darwin Nunez isn’t going to be the player we all wished for. Sad reality."

An X user named Wilco was perplexed that Nunez failed to score against a lowly side like Accrington, and felt it must become a case study:

"How Darwin Núñez didn’t even come close to scoring in a full 90 minute match against Accrington Stanley needs to be studied. Think I’ve drawn the line."

And finally, one fan just asked to get Nunez sold:

Liverpool next play Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the Premier League on January 14.

Liverpool bounce back from Tottenham defeat in style

Although they were expected to win on Saturday, Liverpool pulled it off rather convincingly, putting four past Accrington Stanley without conceding. It was a nice response to their 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg earlier this week.

A late goal from Lucas Bergvall earned an injury-plagued Spurs a narrow victory at home in the first leg of their semi-final encounter. It was a stark contrast from their stunning 6-3 defeat to the Reds just a few weeks earlier in the Premier League.

The win over Accrington means Arne Slot's team have rebuilt some of the punctured momentum ahead of a tricky away game against Forest in the league. The Tricky Trees are the only side to have beaten the Reds in the English top flight this season, coming away with a shocking 1-0 victory at Anfield on Matchday 4. They haven't done a league double against them since the 1962-63 season.
