Liverpool have certainly started the season strongly but the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold remains a key issue that needs to be addressed. With the full-back’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and growing links to Real Madrid, former Reds defender Glen Johnson has suggested that Alexander-Arnold’s England teammate, Jude Bellingham, could play a significant role in his decision.
Alexander-Arnold has been with Liverpool since the age of six, steadily rising through the ranks before making his debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2016. Since then, the 25-year-old has developed into one of the Premier League’s best right-backs.
The defender is regarded as a key player for the club and was even appointed vice-captain last season. However, concerns about his future are mounting, as his contract is set to expire in June 2025. Speculation intensified when Alexander-Arnold recently mentioned that he is a player “highly motivated by trophies and winning things.”
Glen Johnson, who made 200 appearances for Liverpool, suggested that Jude Bellingham could be a crucial factor in Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to Real Madrid, who are strongly linked to the defender. The two players share a close bond, which has been evident during their time with the England squad.
Johnson told Betfred (via GOAL):
“The club is 95% of the pull itself but of course, if he speaks to Jude and Jude tells him how great it is there, then that could make his decision final. Let’s face it, if Real Madrid come calling, then that’s where most players will want to go. Jude could be the final piece in the puzzle when it comes to Trent making his decision, but I believe Trent would be up for the deal anyway, regardless of whether Jude is there or not."
Despite all the speculation surrounding his future, Alexander-Arnold has kicked off the season with confidence. He has already provided two assists this season, with his most recent one against Bournemouth marking his 100th goal contribution for the club (19 goals and 81 assists).
Liverpool boss Arne Slot highlights an area for Trent Alexander-Arnold to improve
Trent Alexander-Arnold has quickly adapted to Arne Slot’s methods and the two appear to have a strong working relationship. The England defender has indicated that he is combining with the head coach to improve his game, something that has been clearly reflected in his performances.
Slot, for his part, has utilized Alexander-Arnold’s strengths effectively but noted that while his ability with the ball is exceptional, his focus during defensive phases is an area that can be further developed.
"I think with him it is not about if he is capable of doing things, it’s more can his concentration rate constantly be in 100% focus? So this is what we talk about a lot, that he has to stay active in every situation of the game, even if the ball is further away from him. But it’s not that we or I taught him to defend in the last three months; he’s won the league and he’s won the Champions League," Slot said (via Guardian).
After a minor setback against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool bounced back with consecutive victories, defeating AC Milan 3-1 and Bournemouth 3-0. Their next game is against West Ham United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, September 25, followed by an away fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, September 28.
