Cristiano Ronaldo gives up on chance to set new record as he unselfishly gifts goal to Bruno Fernandes during Portugal vs Turkey

Portugal ace Cristiano Ronaldo unselfishly set up Bruno Fernandes for their third goal against Turkey at UEFA Euro 2024 on Saturday, June 22. The Al Nassr star was one-on-one with Turkish custodian Altay Bayındır but opted to square it for his teammate to tap home from close range.

Playing in his record-extending sixth European championship, Ronaldo is chasing another incredible record - to become the first to net in as many tournaments. The former Real Madrid star has netted at least once in all five previous editions.

Then only 19, Ronaldo struck twice at Euro 2004 as Portugal finished runners-up on home turf. He added just one more to his tally four years later but netted thrice each in Euro 2012 and 2016 respectively. In Euro 2020, the 39-year-old enjoyed his most productive campaign at the championship, scoring five times. He won the Golden Boot as well.

At the ongoing Germany showpiece though, Ronaldo hasn't enjoyed much luck so far. At the time of writing, he is still goalless but registered an assist in their second group fixture against Turkey, rather unselfishly.

With only the goalkeeper to beat, the forward looked well in contention to score. However, he spotted Fernandes lurking completely unmarked on the left, and passed it to him. The Manchester United playmaker made the easiest of finishes for 3-0 in the 55th minute.

That was the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's eighth assist at the Euros, a new record.

Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal cruising into the Round of 16

At the time of writing, Portugal are leading Turkey by 3-0, and are well on course for another three points. The Selecao had left it late against the Czech Republic but produced a dominant performance to win 2-1.

Roberto Martinez's side are cruising into the knockout stages right now, and still have a game to spare. Portugal will once again be the favorites in their final group game against Georgia on June 26.

However, the Crusaders have proved to be no pushovers. They gave Turkey a serious run for their money before holding the Czech Republic to a draw. The eastern European side will be aiming to cause an upset in their final group match, but Portugal are a different kettle of fish.
