Kylian Mbappe has embarked on a new journey in his career. Following in his idol Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps, Mbappe has joined Real Madrid to take the club into a new era of dominance.
The French superstar was unveiled to the world as the latest Galactico in front of a packed Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, July 16. The ceremony brought back plenty of memories from Ronaldo’s presentation in 2009, with Mbappe even paying tribute to the Portuguese icon in his speech.
Mbappe will now be eager to recreate his idol’s exploits on the pitch, with Ronaldo going on to become the club’s all-time top scorer with 450 goals in 438 games. While the 25-year-old is a long way from those achievements, let’s take a look at how the two superstars fared in their final season before joining Los Blancos.
Kylian Mbappe is joining Real Madrid on the back of a 44-goal season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Of those, 27 came in 29 appearances in the Ligue 1 while he scored eight goals in 12 UEFA Champions League appearances. The French forward also scored eight goals in six Coupe de France appearances, along with one goal in the Trophee des Champions.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 26 goals in 53 appearances in his final season with Manchester United. The Portuguese scored 18 goals in the Premier League, four in the Champions League, two in the League Cup, and one each in the FA Cup and the Club World Cup.
Ronaldo, however, edges Mbappe in terms of assists in his final season, registering 12 compared to the Frenchman’s 10.
The two players clinched three titles each in the final season before joining Real Madrid. While Ronaldo won the Premier League, League Cup and the Club World Cup, Mbappe lifted the Ligue 1, Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions titles.
In terms of individual awards, Mbappe won the Ligue 1 Player of the Season and the top scorer award. On the other hand, Ronaldo won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year, and the first of his five Ballon d’Or awards.
