An Ezequiel Fernandez stunner helped Argentina beat Iraq 3-1 and seal the first win of their Paris 2024 Olympics campaign on Saturday, July 27. The Boca Juniors midfielder converted from range to seal the three points for Argentina. Javier Mascherano’s men recovered from their controversial loss to Morocco in their opener.

Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez set up Thiago Almada for the opening goal of the game in the 13th minute. Iraq striker Ayman Hussein equalised at the stroke of half-time. Luciano Gondou restored the lead for Argentina in the 62nd minute. Fernandez’s strike five minutes from time gave Alvarez his second assist and sealed the win.

Fans on social media took note of Equi Fernandez's performance.

“Equi Fernández is a phenomenal football player, he just CAN'T go to Saudi Arabia,” a user wrote on X.
“Yeah he should be in premier league,” another commented.
“He deserves to be in main team,” a user wrote.
“let's push for him to join a European team,” another wrote in the comments.

Some fans wanted their clubs to sign Fernandez. One user wrote:

“Perfect rodri back up in man city.”
“@LFC pay the money,” another commented.

The Albiceleste are currently top of Group B on goal difference. All four teams are on three points after two games, with one win and a loss. The two-time Olympic champions will now face Ukraine in their final group game on Tuesday, July 30.

Argentina rugby star reacts to France fans booing the team at 2024 Olympics

Argentina rugby player Marocs Monetta has said France fans at the Olympics are booing them because they are still hurt by their 2022 FIFA World Cup win.

Javier Mascherano’s men were booed in their opening game against Morocco, which they controversially lost 2-1.

“I love the atmosphere, we enjoyed it a lot. I don't know if they are hurt by Messi and the World Cup or because they don't like us. Maybe they're scared of us,” Monetta said.

La Albiceleste's senior side have won three major international tournaments in a row - the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 World Cup. Counting the Finalissima win in 2022, the men's football tournament at the Paris Olympics will be the country's fifth consecutive international title.
