Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov reacted to their 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday, December 30.
The Red Devils suffered their ninth league loss of the season. First-half goals from Aleksander Isak (4') and Joelinton (19') were enough to deliver three points for Eddie Howe's side at Old Trafford.
United's performance has failed to improve despite the appointment of Ruben Amorim. Under his tutelage, the 20-time league champions have managed just two wins in eight league games and are winless in three league outings. This poor run of form has seen the side drop to 14th in the points table, seven points above the relegation zone.
Berbatov, who watched his former side's loss to Newcastle, shared a picture of himself watching the game on Instagram. He highlighted the match score with a facepalm emoji, hinting at his disappointment with the result.
Manchester United face another tough test in their next league game. They kick off the second half of their campaign against leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday (January 5).
When Dimitar Berbatov suggested that Manchester United could struggle under Ruben Amorim
Dimitar Berbatov had spoken of the possibility of Manchester United struggling to fit into Ruben Amorim's style of play. The Portuguese tactician was given the reins of the club following the sacking of Erik ten Hag in October.
Speaking to BetMGM before Amorim's appointment, Berbatov said (via Manchester Evening News):
"It won't be easy for him. He has a certain way of playing and I'm not sure this current squad is well suited to that 3-4-3 formation, so it will take time for him to get the right players in and also make his current ones adapt to the new way of playing.
"The current players need to step up, though. They need to show the new manager that they can adapt and want to be part of this new era at the club. It's not going to be easy as he plays a specialist formation, so it will be interesting to see which players he fancies and which he doesn't," he added.
Manchester United have had six losses, four wins and a draw in 11 games across competitions under Amorim as manager.
