Former Premier League forward Yannick Bolasie hailed Bukayo Saka on social media after the Arsenal winger helped England win their EURO 2024 quarter-final clash. The Three Lions secured their berth in the semi-finals of the competition after beating Switzerland on penalties.
After a first half that saw neither net bulge, Breel Embolo opened the scoring for the Swiss in the 75th minute. It seemed as though the Three Lions' dream to win the competition had come to an end, but only five minutes later, a magical moment from Bukayo Saka turned things around.
Declan Rice laid the ball out to the winger on the right and the 22-year-old cut inwards before unleashing a curling effort that stumped the Swiss defense. His shot hit the bottom corner from range, beating goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who could only watch as the ball entered the net.
The goal was enough to push the game into extra time, before the Three Lions went on to win the penalty shootout. Bukayo Saka's effort led to lots of praise from different quarters, with former Premier League star Yannick Bolasie taking to social media to hail the winger. He notably lashed out at plans to play the Arsenal man as a left-back, posting:
"Starrrrr boy!!!!! Don’t ever chat about no left back business."
Bolasie is hardly the only former player to shower praise on Bukayo Saka for leading England to the semi-finals of EURO 2024. Others, including Rio Ferdinand and David Beckham, have all said good things about the 22-year-old.
Gary Neville among former players praising Bukayo Saka after England win EURO 2024 quarter-final
Bukayo Saka's goal lifted the spirits of many across England, with some former Three Lions players thoroughly pleased with the Arsenal winger. Speaking after the EURO 2024 clash, Manchester United legend Gary Neville spoke highly of Saka.
He told ITV that fans from everywhere would enjoy watching the 22-year-old play (via Arsenal Insider):
“I don’t know many players who transcend sort of club rivalries, but he is one of those players who I think is enjoyed by every fan from every club. You look at him and just think he is a joy, he has got that happiness and that spirit in his game."
England now have to face the Netherlands in the EURO 2024 semi-finals, and they will need to be at their best to get past Oranje and enter the final.
