The Netherlands fans have reacted negatively to Memphis Depay's inclusion in the starting line-up to face England in the Euro 2024 semi-final on Wednesday, July 10. The striker has failed to impress in recent appearances and his inclusion raises more questions than solutions in the mind of fans.
Depay, who has made 97 appearances for Oranje, scoring 46 and assisting 32 has seen his stock drop in recent times. He would not be anywhere near the team if the fan reactions on X were anything to go by.
The team selection has not filled the fans with confidence, with one posting:
"England 3-0 loading"
Another fan wrote:
"why is memphis starting again"
Another fan also questioned the former Atletico Madrid forward's inclusion, posting:
"Depay still starting"
Yet another Netherlands fan asked in their post:
"Why’s Depay on man"
The final post for our selection implored the striker to:
"Depay better step up today"
The forward will be keen to step up and justify his manager's faith in him in at Euro 2024. Depay has scored one goal and provided one assist in his five games at the competition so far and will be keen to improve his tally in today's crunch tie.
Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman confident ahead of Euro 2024 clash with England
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman is confident in his side's ability against England in their semifinal clash in Dortmund at Euro 2024. The Dutch are looking to book their place in the final at the Three Lions' expense as they hope to win the trophy for the first time since 1988.
Ahead of the match, the former Barcelona player and manager, who was part of the European championship-winning team 36 years ago, said (via Fotmob):
"We know that there is really not much difference between the two teams, it’s really 50-50 in my opinion. But we will need the perfect game to win. We know they have a lot of individual qualities but both teams are really strong and it will be a good fight.”
He concluded:
"England had to play extra time in their last game (against Switzerland) so maybe that could be a difference in the latter stages of the match. We are sharp, we are focused and we are looking forward to playing a good match against them."
Both nations will be keen to secure a place in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin where they will face Spain on July 14. The Netherlands will hope to win the tournament for the second time and make Koeman the only man in their history to win the competition as a player and manager.
