England goalkeeper Dean Henderson has given a fitness update about Three Lions defender John Stones ahead of their opening clash against Serbia at Euro 2024. The Manchester City centre-back had been struck with a bout of illness and had to be quarantined from the rest of the squad.

In Stones' absence, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Brighton & Hove Albion's Lewis Dunk were expected to start England's opening game of the tournament in Gelsenkirchen. Henderson, however, expects Stones to make a full recovery in time for their tournament opener on Sunday, June 16.

The Eagles shot-stopper stated that Stones had a "little sickness bug" that the team doctors were handling, saying (via Mail Online):

"He's just got a little sickness bug that the doctors on top of, so hopefully we will see him on the grass in the next couple of days."

John Stones will hope to be back and available for selection for England's run in the tournament. The Three Lions are already missing a senior centre-back, Manchester United's Harry Maguire, through injury.

England defender John Stones back in training after illness scare ahead of Euro 2024 opener

England defender John Stones has returned to training after a stomach bug ruled him out of a recent training session. Gareth Southgate will be glad to have the Manchester City man back ahead of Euro 2024. While there's a chance that Stones will be rested for the game against Serbia, the England manager will be pleased to see him back in training and available for the rest of the competition.

One of the favorites for the title, England will also be hoping for left-back Luke Shaw to regain full fitness. Shaw is the only natural left-back in the Three Lions squad and Southgate will have to play either Kieran Trippier or Joe Gomez at the position in his absence.

The Three Lions will, however, be confident heading into their opening game in Gelsenkirchen against Serbia. Their awe-inspiring options in attack should see them dispatch their opponents comfortably.

England will face Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia in what should be an easy group to dominate for the Three Lions, at least on paper.
