Former Chelsea striker turned pundit Tony Cascarino has named his favorite for the Premier League Golden Boot between Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. Both attackers have started the season on a bright note but Cascarino believes Salah cannot catch Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.
Haaland has already scored seven Premier League goals this season in just three appearances, including two hat-tricks. Mohamed Salah, on the other hand, has scored and assisted thrice each in as many games.
Despite Salah's exceptional start to the season, Cascarino believes that Haaland should be able to retain his Golden Boot convincingly. The former Celtic and Marseille striker backed the Liverpool number 11 to reach the 20-goal mark but doubted whether he would score 30 goals.
Cascarino told talkSPORT, as quoted by TBR Football:
“Look, last season, Erling got 27 league goals, was it, last year in the Premier League? I think he got 27. Next was sort of four behind. Mo does look sharp. I just don’t think Mo can get those numbers that Haaland will get."
The Irishman added:
“He is a centre-forward, he does take penalties. Yes, Mo Salah takes penalties as well. I don’t think Mo can match his numbers. I think Mo can get 20 and around plus, just over 20, I don’t think he can get 30 now in the way that Liverpool are going to play.”
Erling Haaland has won the Premier League Golden Boot in each of the two seasons he has played for Manchester City. Mohamed Salah, on the other hand, has won the leading goalscorer on three occasions during his time at Liverpool.
Premier League expert makes bold claim on Mohamed Salah and Jurgen Klopp
Journalist Graeme Bailey has made a bold claim regarding Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah and former Reds' manager Jurgen Klopp. The Premier League expert has claimed that the Egyptian attacker would have left the Merseyside giants this summer had Klopp still been in charge.
While Klopp is known for his excellent relationship with his players, he made headlines by clashing with his star forward last season. The two had an altercation towards the end of the last season when Liverpool were held 2-2 by West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Graeme Bailey has claimed that Salah would have departed Anfield this summer if Klopp were still in the hot seat. He told Rousing the Kop:
“If Jurgen Klopp had stayed, Mo Salah wouldn’t still be at Anfield, that’s my belief, He’d be in Saudi Arabia now. A lot of Liverpool fans dismiss that, but there is a difference in his demeanour this season. It’s not that he was unhappy before, but when you compare the two, it is different.”
Bailey also insisted that Liverpool are planning to tie their superstar forward down with a new deal and will open contract talks soon. He added:
“The plan all the time was that the two parties would speak later in this year that’s where we are. Liverpool are telling me that they need to allow Arne Slot to get to know Salah. Talks have already taken place and further conversations are set to happen around the October international break.”
Mohamed Salah's current deal with Liverpool expires next summer and the Egyptian publicly stated that he is yet to be approached by the Premier League giants regarding a new deal. The 32-year-old has been exceptional for the Reds since his reported £34.3 million move from AS Roma in 2017. He has scored scored 214 goals and produced 92 assists in 352 appearances for the Merseyside giants so far.
