Former United States international Alexi Lalas has provided his thoughts on Lionel Messi's outing in Argentina's recent 2-0 Copa America semi-final win over Canada.

Earlier on Tuesday (July 9), Argentina reached their second successive final at the Copa America after their fifth straight victory in the United States. Following Julian Alvarez's 22nd-minute opener, the La Albiceleste captain scored his side's second in the 51st minute.

During the buildup of Messi's goal in the second half of the Copa America last-four clash, Enzo Fernandez hit the ball towards Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau's right-hand side. But, the 37-year-old forward touched the ball to divert it away from Crepeau's reach.

Speaking on Alexi Lalas' State of the Union Podcast, Lalas claimed that the former Barcelona man is yet to perform at his best level at the ongoing Copa America. He elaborated:

"We have still not seen the best of Messi, although he got a goal tonight. Even an ugly Messi goal is still worthy of talk. Plenty of words will be written about it, but we haven’t seen the best of him and I don't think we have seen the best of this Argentina team."

Opining on the world champions' continental campaign, Lalas added:

"It should be said that they got a much easier side of the draw and what was anticipated and predicted by most has come to fruition. Not necessarily an Argentina vs Canada semi-final, but they have done what they've done [in the last edition by reaching the final]."

The ex-Los Angeles Galaxy and New England Revolution star opined:

"At times, it's been okay. At times, it's been ugly. Were still kind of waiting for them to do something spectacular or for Messi to do something spectacular and we haven't had that yet [at the tournament]."

Lionel Messi reacts after guiding Argentina to Copa America last-four win over Canada

After guiding his national side to a 2-0 win over Canada, the eight-time Ballon d'Or award winner called for his teammates to remain focused. He captioned a post on Instagram:

"LETTSSS GOOOO!!! ON TO THE FINALS!!! Very happy to make it again to the last Copa America match. We still have one more step to go."

Argentina, who beat Brazil to win the last edition of the tournament, will face either Uruguay or Colombia in the much-awaited final on July 14.

The Barcelona great, on the other hand, has scored one goal and laid out as many assist in four appearances at the ongoing tournament.
