Ex-Watford star Troy Deeney has asserted that Liverpool and Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is a better player than Reds superstar Mohamed Salah.
Earlier on Sunday (January 5), Mac Allister played a vital role in the Reds' 2-2 Premier League home stalemate against Manchester United. The 26-year-old completed 41 of his 49 passes, contributed an assist, registered three shots, and won one of his two tackles and seven of his 16 duels during the clash.
In his 'Team of the Week' column for BBC, Deeney showered praise on Mac Allister and hinted the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is better than Salah. He wrote:
"Every time I watch him he always gets an assist and he always looks like the best player on the pitch. I know that's a bold statement to make when you've got people like Mohamed Salah, but every time I watch him he jumps off the screen to me."
Deeney, who featured in 165 Premier League games as a player, added:
"Excellent performance against Manchester United, really combative, silky touches and he may go down as a Liverpool legend if he stays there long enough."
Mac Allister, who left Brighton & Hove Albion for £35 million in 2023, is considered to be a vital starter for Arne Slot's side. He has started 22 of his 26 overall appearances so far this season, contributing three goals and as many assists.
Jamie Carragher hits out at 2 Liverpool stars
After the end of the Reds' 2-2 draw against Manchester United, Reds legend Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts on his former club's fallacies. He opined on The Gary Neville Podcast (h/t Metro):
"Andrew Robertson is hanging on for dear life, he's been a legend for this club but it feels like he's involved in a lot of goals at the minute, he just feels half a yard short. If Trent [Alexander-Arnold] is having problems as well on the other side that puts an awful lot of pressure on the middle two. That's the one thing that can stop Liverpool from winning the league, the full-back areas."
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is in the final six months of his Reds deal, was scrutinised for his poor performance against Manchester United. He was wayward with his passing and quite a bit lackadaisical with his man marking on Sunday.
Andrew Robertson, on the other hand, has popped up as Liverpool's weak link this season. He has often failed to properly mark his winger, conceded two penalties across all competitions, and even received one red card so far this term.
