Former England manager Fabio Capello has slammed Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola ahead of the side's clash with Juventus. The two teams are set to face off in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, December 11, at the Allianz Stadium.
Guardiola has come under heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike following his side's poor form in recent weeks. The English champions have managed just one win in their last nine games across competitions, their worst period under the Spanish manager.
Speaking on Sky Sports Italia ahead of City's clash with Juventus, Capello labeled Guardiola as "arrogant and presumptuous". He said (via Football Italia):
"Guardiola is a great coach, but he is far too arrogant and presumptuous."
Capello continued:
"At times he has even lost trophies because he wanted to prove that he was the one winning and not the players, so he dropped key figures from the side in the big games. That was in my view an attempt to take the spotlight and the credit away from his squad."
Pep Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016 and has since transformed the club into one of the major powerhouses of European football. He has led them to win six league titles, including a continental treble in 2023.
Capello, on the other hand, has managed some of the biggest clubs in Europe, such as AC Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid, and AS Roma. He notably won league titles with all the aforementioned clubs and the UEFA Champions League with the Rossoneri in 1994.
Former Premier League star slams Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes
Manchester City's goalkeeper Ederson Moraes received his fair share of criticism from former Premier League star Paolo Di Canio. The former West Ham United forward claimed that the Brazilian shot-stopper's arrogant nature leads him to make mistakes on the pitch.
"Ederson has talent, but he is so arrogant that he makes these mistakes due to sheer over-confidence and trying to show off, like a back-heel flick when under pressure," Di Canio said (via Football Italia).
Di Canio opined that Ederson should be dropped from the starting XI to make him humble. He added that Juventus are capable of pulling a shocker against Manchester City due to their complacency in defense.
"These are two teams, one that has not yet found its identity, another that has lots it. Up until a month ago, City were the team with the clearest identity in the world. Now Guardiola’s side concede goals so cheaply, absurd mistakes against the weakest opponents," he added.
"I expect Juve can hurt this Manchester City. They score goals, but they concede a lot too."
