Inter Miami boss Phil Neville expects more from his marquee forward Gonzalo Higuain following a disappointing start to the 2022 MLS season.
Phil Neville has been let down by Higuain's recent performances and believes the Argentine should be the focal point of their attack this season. Speaking after their 2-0 loss to Los Angeles FC, the former England Women's boss said:
"For us to be successful, he has to perform. For us to be successful, he has to perform in these moments for this team. That's the challenge. For me, and I’m really strong on this, his role hasn't changed.
"He is the one that is our best finisher. He is the one that we demand the most goals from. He is the one that we demand the most assists from. Period."
As things stand, Inter Miami have picked up just one point from their first three MLS games this season. They secured a 0-0 draw on the opening day of the new season against Chicago Fire. Since then, they have lost two games on the bounce.
The Herons suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of Austin FC before losing 2-0 to LAFC on Saturday. Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Leonardo Campana has so far scored the team's only goal this season.
This poor start is not acceptable for a David Beckham-owned side after bringing in some good talent prior to the start of the new season. The Herons signed Finland international Robert Taylor, DeAndre Yedlin from Galatasaray and Emerson Rodriguez from Colombian side Millonarios.
Gonzalo Higuain remains Inter Miami's main threat going forward
Despite bringing in new footballers earlier this year, Gonzalo Higuain remains Inter Miami's most important player from their roster. The 34-year-old is currently the club's Designated Player from their squad which puts expectations on his shoulders.
Last season, Gonzalo Higuain scored 12 goals and provided six assists in the MLS for Inter Miami.
However, this season has not started off nicely for the former Real Madrid forward. He has played in all three of Inter Miami's games and has only contributed one assist.
Gonzalo Higuain came in with a lot of reputation following an excellent career in Europe. He played for some of the biggest teams on the continent, including Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus.
The forward also reached the World Cup final in 2014 with Argentina.
