French Football Federation (FFF) provided an update on Kylian Mbappe’s nose injury in France's Euro 2024 opener against Austria on Monday, June 17. The match ended 1-0 in favor of Didier Deschamps' side at the Merkur Spiel Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The only goal of the match was an own goal by defender Maximilian Wober from a Mbappe cross in the 38th minute.
During the concluding minutes of the match, Mbappe had a bad collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso and hit the ground with a bleeding nose. The France captain was unable to continue with the play as the medical staff rushed to help him.
While Mbappe was getting his injury assessed, referee Jesus Gil Manzano did not allow Les Bleus to make the necessary substitution immediately as France temporarily played with 10 men. The new Real Madrid signing returned to the pitch without permission but could not continue and received a yellow card for his move. Olivier Giroud then replaced Mbappe in the 90th minute.
Following the incident, FFF issued an update on Mbappe's situation, stating that the captain had suffered a nose fracture (via journalist Fabrizio Romano).
The statement read (via Romano on X):
"Kylian Mbappé returns to the base camp of the French national team. Kylian Mbappé suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Düsseldorf. The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture."
The statement also mentioned the next steps of treatment and recovery of the star forward.
"Mbappé will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future," it added.
Mentioning Kylian Mbappe's return to Euro 2024, the statement continued:
"A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment."
France are set to face the Netherlands in their next Euro 2024 fixture at the Red Bull Arena Leipzig on Friday, June 21.

After France's 1-0 win over Austria, head coach Didier Deschamps addressed captain Kylian Mbappe's nose injury and said (via Reuters):
"(His) nose is not good at all. Even if it's just the nose, it's the big negative point for us tonight."
After FFF provided the update on Mbappe's nose fracture, mentioning that the star forward would be wearing a mask during his recovery, the French captain made a hilarious post on X that read:
"Any ideas for masks 🎭😅 ?"
Kylian Mbappe has made 79 appearances for France, registering 47 goals. He has helped Les Bleus to a World Cup and a UEFA Nations League title.
