Football pundit Gary Neville praised Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim for taking a hard stand and dropping Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho for the Manchester derby. The Red Devils legend also hoped the duo take derby day drop to the chin and bounce back in style.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville claimed he personally wouldn't have accepted his teammates to drop levels in training and lauded the Portuguese tactician for taking the tough call. He stressed the rules needed to be followed, saying:
"I don't know about their long-term future but what is really clear is he mentioned engaging with teammates, standards, so he has given us clues, emphatic clues, as to what has happened in the last few days that they have been moping and not doing their bit around the training ground, not engaging with their teammates properly and the standards in training and he has thought 'no I am not having it and I am not accepting it'. And good on him.
"We have been sat here for years as ex-players saying give your absolute all when players are not running back; we have seen Rashford and Garnacho for years stand up on that left and right-wing and not chase back when full-backs have gone past them yet keep their place in the team. No more. I want Marcus Rashford and Garnacho to come back stronger, take the message of going to train at the training ground on a Sunday when no one else is there, I want them to take it in the right spirit and become the very best players for Manchester United."
Manchester United did not miss Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho in the Manchester derby as they came from behind to seal a dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday, December 15.
They went 1-0 down through a Josko Gvardiol header in the 36th minute. But Buno Fernades equalized from the spot in the 88th minute before Amad Diallo scored a stunning late winner in the 90th minute to seal three points for Amorim's side.
Ruben Amorim ready to give Manchester United duo a chance next week
Ruben Amorim has insisted that dropping Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho was not a disciplinary issue. He stated that the Manchester United duo did not train to the level expected from them and said in his post-match press conference (via ESPN):
"Next week, next game, new life, they are fighting for their places. For me it's important, the performance in training, the performance in games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with teammates, the way you push your teammates."
Manchester United are 13th in the league table after their win over Manchester City, but just five points behind the defending champions, who sit fifth.
